Quality Culture

In GMP guidelines (WHO, EU, PIC/S), you will find requirements for equipment, facilities, and personnel—but you won’t find a chapter called “Quality Culture.” And yet, it’s often the very first thing inspectors (auditors) sense the moment they step into a plant.

Quality culture is not a slogan on a wall. It is the answer to one question: “What will operators do when no one is watching?” If a plant is designed in a way that makes compliance difficult (e.g., handwashing sinks located too far away, overly complex equipment operation), a “shortcut culture” will naturally emerge.

How does Humiley Group INC “build in” Quality Culture through design?

At Humiley, we believe the best way to build a quality culture is to make the right thing the easiest thing to do. We assess and embed this principle through three steps:

 

1. Behavioral Design Check: reviewing design through the lens of behavioral psychology

Execution: Humiley arranges spaces so that the compliant workflow is the most convenient path. For example, we locate gowning and handwashing points such that personnel must pass through them to enter production areas—there is no possible “workaround.”

Verification: We run “lazy-user simulations”: “If I wanted to skip this step, could I do it?” If the answer is yes, the design must be revised immediately to eliminate the bypass.

 

2. Applying Poka-Yoke (error-proofing) into the system

A blame culture kills quality. Humiley designs systems to prevent user errors rather than punish people for making them.

Execution: We implement mechanically differentiated connections (key-coded couplings) for different raw-material piping lines so operators cannot cross-connect them—even by accident.

Verification: Our engineers intentionally attempt incorrect assembly and deliberately execute out-of-sequence operations on the HMI. The system must block these actions to pass handover acceptance.

 

3. Transferring the mindset—not only the technology

During handover, Humiley does not simply teach customers which buttons to press.

 

Approach: We train using the “Why – If not” method. We explain to operators why the design is built that way, and what risks arise if procedures are not followed. Understanding drives self-discipline and ownership.
